I will not be the cheapest option you can find for your project, but I will never give up on my commitments no matter what the sacrifice. I always get the job done. That requires what I call "Practical Efficiency": thoroughly understanding the regulatory requirements and grounding them in the real-world scenario of each project using practical thinking. I am constantly using that perspective to refine my approach and come up with solutions to make projects more efficient and come in on time.
Remote projects are one place where I really shine. I know what it means for a project budget when work stops because of one tool that was left behind. Because of my adaptability and my connections with highly skilled craftsmen, we have the ability to create a shipyard or construction crew customized to your project anywhere on the planet. We prefer to do it in Homer, where the vendors can work from their shops and we know the lay of the land. We work very closely with the Coast Guard and the ABS in Homer on inspected vessels and we have ABS welders at the ready. If someone has told you that your vessel is too big or your project is too complicated, I’m your guy.
If you want to know more about how I work, don’t ask me, ask my happy customers. I managed a multi-million dollar vessel repair project that was completed three weeks ahead of schedule. Alaska Marine Excavation said “Mr. Alward met our deadlines, our expectations, and fulfilled all of the responsibilities and duties that were asked of him. He was a consistent and communicative manager.”
More than 75 people worked on that job and I knew each of their names, and I earned their respect because if something needed doing, I was pushing a broom right there alongside them. There’s no job above or below anyone. I’ve seen worksites where subcontractors tiptoe around the project manager and are afraid of telling him what’s really going on with a project. That’s not how I operate. I respect every person on a job, and I know how important every role is because I’ve been in their shoes.
I have been doing project management for decades in construction and the maritime industry. I started out as a 16 year old managing my dad’s crew on construction projects, and there is no better way to learn than by managing men more experienced than you. It taught me how to work with people instead of working against them. The people closest to the problems are the ones who understand them the best, and they should be involved in designing the solution.
My background blends hands-on experience and strategic leadership; I'm your go-to resource for navigating complex, high-stakes environments. My journey has taken me from the front lines as an EMT and a Peace Corps Volunteer to managing finances and implementing cutting-edge technology solutions for a bustling harbor with an annual budget of over $5 million. In this role, I streamlined processes, supervised A/R and A/P, and improved the customer experience by leveraging innovative data management tools.
As an integral part of the Homer Marine Trades Association, I have represented the vibrant marine industry of Homer, Alaska at national and statewide trade shows, organized community events, and marketed Homer as a destination for boat work of all kinds. It’s not just for show, we really do have some of the most talented and dedicated tradespeople in all of Alaska right here in this town, and most of them know me by name.
As a natural problem solver, I thrive on high-profile projects with significant community impact, and I understand the importance of clear communication and stakeholder engagement. I’ve worked inside the government and I understand how a single missed deadline can snowball into months of delays. I have the knowledge of regulations and attention to detail to get things done right the first time. My ability to think strategically while keeping a pulse on the practical details ensures that every project I sink my teeth into moves forward smoothly and efficiently. Whether it’s handling emergencies or complex administrative challenges, I bring intelligence, reliability, experience, and a solution-driven mindset to every task.
